Hiiragiya Ryokan

Shijo-Kawaramachi/Pontocho, Central Downtown Kyoto, Kyoto

This ryokan, established in the heart of the old capital in 1818, offers a splendid location for strolling or shopping in the nearby downtown area. The main building is a two-floor wooden structure built in the traditional sukiya style, and the three-floor new building, while featuring a steel frame, is imbued with traditional Japanese sensibility. Most of the guest rooms offer views of the main garden or smaller gardens. Dinner is prepared in the famous Kyoto kaiseki-ryori style featuring seasonal ingredients, and each item of the course is served one at a time on carefully selected dishes. Feel welcomed by this ryokan's humble, modest hospitality.

Wonderful in all ways. A special trip,we felt like we were transported to old Kyoto. A feeling of the Edo period with modern conveniences and gourmet food. Excellent dining and service.

For the amount I paid, I expected royal treatment and an amazing view. While a few of our crazy requests were readily fulfilled (a go board, paper for caligraphy), we were placed on the second level and didn't have much of a view of any gardens. The food was rather bland, even for kyoto standards. Not worth the splurge.
