This year marks the 31st running of Sapporo White Illumination, which combines early winter and Christmas-themed
activities. This special winter event started in 1981 with 1,000 lights and has grown each year since. Odori Park
features Christmas and cosmos-themed illuminated sculptures, while the streets of Sapporo Ekimae and Minami 1-jo are
lined with ornament and light-adorned trees.

The 18 meter tree -- delivered by ship from Hakodate's sister city of Halifax, Canada -- is to be decked out with some 20,000 glittering lights, shimmering on the face of the bay.
